Scouting Program

Troop 8, Boy Scouts of America have taught values, leadership and outdoor skills to the youth of Fort Dodge for over fifty years. Troop 8 meets every Tuesday from 7:00 to 8:30 in First Church Fellowship Hall. The Scouting Program is a part of the outreach ministry of First Church - available to all youth in the area. Our present membership includes 28 boys and 9 adults. Members of First United Methodist are in key leadership roles but the majority of the youth and adults are not members of the congregation. We actively recruit and serve youth and adult members from throughout the community.

This is an active group of boys. We attempt to conduct an outdoor activity every month. Our Scouts attend a week long summer camp each year. A "Below Zero" camp is a winter highlight as is our annual ski trip. High Adventure activities are a key to keeping our older boys involved. We outfit our own nine day canoeing trips to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness in Minnesota and to Quetico Provincial Park in Canada. Nine boys and two adults just attended a seventeen day trip where they backpacked seventy miles through the mountains at Philmont Scout Ranch and enjoyed white water rafting in Colorado. Good Deeds, community service, camping, outdoor adventures, learning skills and having fun are the means through which we instill sound Christian values and develop future leaders for our community and country. The large number of Eagle Scouts produced by Troop 8 reflects well on the commitment of the leaders and boys to demonstrate the Scout Oath and Law in their daily lives.

We welcome any boy who is eleven years of age or who has completed the fifth grade to join us for a lifetime of Scouting Adventures. Prior Cub Scout experience is not required. Parents are welcome at our meetings and are encouraged to invest their time in the continuing success of our Scouting Program.
